Manchester City is considering Enzo Maresca as a long-term successor to Pep Guardiola.

What happened?

Maresca served as Guardiola's assistant during City's 2022/23 season. He then took the top job at Leicester City, leading the Foxes to instant promotion at the end of 2023/24. But Maresca left to join Chelsea on a five-year deal in June 2024, with Todd Boehly paying out £8M in compensation.

Why it matters for Manchester City

With Guardiola stepping down at the Etihad Stadium, City chiefs are planning for life after their iconic Spanish coach. Maresca's previous contract runs until June 2029, and Chelsea is due compensation for his potential return to Manchester. The Blues have reportedly quoted £10M to facilitate the move.

What comes next?

After sacking Maresca as Blues boss, Chelsea has turned a fresh page with Xabi Alonso in charge. But Todd Boehly is determined to secure a solid financial settlement to draw a line under Maresca's tenure. Manchester City currently stands 2nd in Premier League, with 64 pts, 19W-7D-5L from 31 games, and recent form WDDWW. Their last result was Manchester City 1-2 Aston Villa on 2026-05-24.
