Josko Gvardiol has returned to peak form for Manchester City, establishing himself as a key figure at left-back after a serious injury. The Croatian defender, who missed five months last season with a broken leg, is now pain-free and at full fitness, contributing significantly to the team's perfect start.
City sit first in the Premier League with 12 points from four games, having conceded only twice. Gvardiol's marauding runs from defence have added a new dimension, and he scored a dramatic injury-time winner in the season opener against Bournemouth. His defensive work was also vital in the 1-0 win at Manchester United, where he won nine of his 11 duels, a match-high.
Long-term commitment
During the summer, Gvardiol ended speculation about his future by signing a new five-year contract with City. He had attracted interest from clubs like Bayern Munich and Barcelona but chose to stay at the Etihad. "I was happy to extend my stay," Gvardiol said, adding that under manager Enzo Maresca, "everyone has to fight for their position, no-one is secure."
The £77m signing from RB Leipzig, the second most expensive defender in history, has adapted to the physical demands of the left-back role. Sources close to the player describe him as being like a "soldier" and say he enjoys the freedom to attack from the flank. His form has been so strong that Rayan Ait-Nouri, signed last summer as a left-back, has been used further forward.
Defensive solidity
Gvardiol's return has solidified a defence that kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford even after Phil Foden's 23rd-minute red card. He ranks in the top ten Premier League players for tackles made this term and has won the seventh-most duels. This defensive resilience underpins City's current five-game winning run across all competitions, which includes a 5-0 thrashing of Norwich last time out.
While he had a quieter game in the Champions League win at Porto, being substituted early after a booking, that is viewed as an off-day rather than a concern. The 24-year-old feels he has gained considerable tactical knowledge since moving to England and is satisfied with Maresca's decision to use him on the left.
What comes next
Gvardiol will feature against Sunderland on Sunday, a match Maresca has labelled their "toughest" so far this season "because of how good they are." Victory would maintain City's 100% league record ahead of the international break. After the Sunderland game, Gvardiol will join up with Croatia for Nations League matches against England and Spain.
With Ruben Dias now club captain and forming a strong partnership with Marc Guehi, City's defensive options look robust. Nico O'Reilly, who filled in at left-back last season, has been told he will get more opportunities in his favoured midfield role. Gvardiol's successful return and new contract provide a major boost as City aim to defend their title.
