Pep Guardiola has pledged his unwavering support for Manchester City following a guilty verdict on financial rule breaches. The manager's public backing comes as the club prepares to submit an appeal by the 2 October deadline.
Guardiola posted a message to supporters on Instagram, stating his full commitment. "I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever," he wrote. The manager added, "I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, staff, Enzo and you, our unique supporters." He concluded by telling fans, "Let me be clear: we will get through this together."
Financial charges and appeal
An independent commission found the club guilty of arranging sham contracts with commercial partners to disguise secret funding of more than £830m between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The ruling followed a four-year investigation into 115 charges, with all but one related to a failure to co-operate with the inquiry.
Manchester City have denied all charges, calling the process a 'Premier League conspiracy theory'. Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has said the club is confident of proving its innocence, while chief executive Ferran Soriano claimed 'irrefutable evidence' was ignored by the commission. The club, owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, must lodge its formal appeal by Friday.
Former defender Micah Richards expressed his reaction to the news. "I was absolutely devastated after reading the Premier League's 'damning' guilty verdict on the club's financial charges," Richards said.
On-field focus remains
Amid the off-field uncertainty, Guardiola's team continues its dominant form on the pitch. Manchester City sit first in the standings with a perfect record of five wins from five games, holding a three-point lead over Arsenal. Their latest victory was a 5-3 win over Sunderland on 20 September, part of a five-game winning run where they have scored 15 goals at a rate of one every 30 minutes of play.
Liverpool currently sit sixth in the table, setting up a significant early-season clash. The club's immediate focus will be on maintaining its sporting excellence while handling the appeal process, which could have profound consequences. The appeal submission is the next critical step for the club's hierarchy.
